OUR ORIGINS & COLLABORATORS
No one does it alone. (Believe me, Mary has tried!) Mary has always been a self-starter, sometimes to her own detriment. After finishing her M.F.A. at The Shakespeare Theatre’s Academy for Classical Acting at The George Washington University in DC, she picked up and moved to New York City. While she has family and a few friends here, her roots are in the Bay Area in California. In 2012, she decided to return to her roots and self-produce as she had done previously in California and Chicago. Her friend and then co-worker John Hamilton, a writer, was looking for a creative outlet as well. The two paired up to produce an Off-Off Broadway revival of The Water Children by Wendy MacLeod. The idea was simple, using the talents of artists we knew and were yet to know, we’d begin building a company to produce works that could uplift all our careers.
As life (and the ever-present issue of finding funding) would have it, Mary has kept the company going, but John has moved on to other things. Together we produced a critically- acclaimed production of Wendy MacLeod’s The Water Children, a “Dark Nights” reading series, the short film, Lines & Asides, and sponsored a friend of John’s solo artist’s show. Whenever possible, we utilized the talents of artists of all disciplines, from acting to writing to music, the idea being to be a place for artists to collaborate and do what we’re meant to do: follow our higher calling. Art.

Various DJs and VJs volunteered to play for us and thanks to the arrival of a heavy-drinking party bus, not only did we gather donations at the door, we fulfilled the bar’s bar tab minium.
Grassroots Theatre Company - Still Life
Grassroots Theatre Company was founded by Daniel Foss, Lisa Herceg, & Mary McGloin in Chicago, Illinois.
Our inaugural production was Still Life by Emily Mann, a docu-drama about a Vietnam Vet, his wife, and his Mistress. It was produced with permission from Dramatist’s Play Service at Sheil Park in Chicago, Illinois.
We received mixed reviews from critics, however, our performance at the Veteran’s Hospital was very warmly received by Vietnam Veterans who felt like the world had forgotten them.

The Phoenix Theater - Cinderella
While recovering from major ear surgery, Mary refused to sit idle. Instead, she produced her first independent theater production: a children’s version of Cinderella at The Phoenix Theatre in Petaluma.
Though it marked her first solo producing venture, Mary’s passion and know-how had been nurtured through Casa Grande High School’s Drama Department, where she learned the ropes under the inspiring guidance of Marvel Gardner.
For the Cinderella production, audience members were asked to bring a canned good for the local food bank, and the show raised $700—all of which Mary donated to The Phoenix Theatre, “a one-of-a-kind nonprofit community building and performance venue” that gave countless Petaluma youth a creative home.
